KOLOMBO: The Sri Lanka government on Friday ordered public sector employees to work from home for two weeks due to severe lack of fuel because the island state wrestled with its worst financial chaos in seven decades.
Sri Lanka scrambling to find foreign exchange to pay for the imported fuel imports, and the stock of gasoline and diesel that is projected to run out in a matter of days.

The combination of wrong government and Pandemi Covid-19 has encouraged 22 million people into the deepest economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948.

“Considering severe limits on fuel supply, weak public transportation systems and difficulty in using private vehicles This circular letter allows minimal staff to report to work from Monday,” said public administration and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Friday.

Of the around one million government employees, those who provide important services such as health care will continue to report for duty in their offices, the circular said.

Earlier this week, the government also approved a four -day work week for public sector workers to help them overcome chronic fuel deficiencies and encourage them to plant food.

The vehicle lane that spreads a few kilometers has been formed in many gas stations throughout the country this week, making some people wait more than 10 hours for fuel.

The country is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package with the expected delegation in Colombo on Monday.

The nation -nation’s union has outlined the plan to collect $ 47 million to provide assistance to 1.7 million Sri Lanka people who were most affected by the crisis for the next four months.

As many as 5 million Sri Lanka people could be directly affected by food shortages in the coming months, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office said in a statement on Friday.
