Although Samsung is a global conglomerate that is known to produce everything from smartphones and gadgets to ships and camera sensors, this brand may be the first to think when you see electric vehicles – or anything related to EV in general. However, increased interest in EV throughout the world seems to have attracted Samsung’s interest, and the company seems increasingly involved in expanding its presence in the EV room.

The first indication of Samsung’s new interest in EV was revealed earlier this month after it was reported that they were in talks with Tesla to become one of the EV -making camera suppliers. Although we don’t know whether Samsung-Testa will pass, we can say with certain trust that Samsung has a big plan as far as EV and battery space. Samsung is also in the final stage of supplying BMW with an OLED screen for upcoming premium sedans. Now it seems that Samsung’s interests are developing again.

Everything to know about Samsung’s $1.3 billion battery factory

According to the new Reuters report, Samsung established a factory worth $ 1.3 billion in Malaysia to make cylindrical batteries – the same type is widely used in EV. When finished, it will become a Samsung second battery manufacturing facility in Malaysia, significantly increases the battery making capacity.

Reuters report states that the upcoming Samsung battery factory will appear in the Seremban area, which is located right south of the Capital City of Kuala Lumpur. The factory will be built in stages, with the first battery of the facilities that are likely to appear in 2024. Samsung estimates that to complete the factory construction in 2025, which follows the facility will produce a battery with a full capacity.

While Samsung states that the battery made in this facility will be used for various applications, including electric devices and micro mobility products, most of these batteries may end in EV. Samsung’s subsidiary involved in business makes the battery called Samsung SDI. The company already has the presence of a battery space with factories located in countries including South Korea, US, China and Hungary.

Samsung, which has developed two types of cylinder batteries over the past few years, can use this upcoming Malaysian factory to not only diversify the battery business but also increase its capacity to produce batteries with a much faster speed. According to Samsung’s own estimate, the company intends to increase its production capacity from the current number of 20 ppm to more than 300 ppm. The new factory in Malaysia will help the company achieve this target faster.
